Emigration Campground sits roughly 17 miles west of Montpelier, Idaho, along State Highway 36 in Emigration Canyon, in a forested setting of pine, spruce and aspen where summer wildflowers and grasses fill the clearings and wild huckleberries become plentiful in mid-August. The campground contains 26 sites in total: 25 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site. Roads into and within the loop are paved, several sites will hold 40-foot trailers with a pull vehicle, and the main loop provides flush toilets and potable drinking water. A separate group facility Group Site 3 (RCD) was recently added about 1.5 miles west of the main campground on Highway 36; that site has vault toilets, drinking water, a picnic shelter with multiple tables and campfire rings, a small amphitheater, and gravel roads and parking. Recreation is immediate and varied: the Highline National Recreation Trail runs adjacent to the campground and is the Montpelier District's principal route, a 55-mile corridor along the Bear River Range that intersects numerous side trails and is open to hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, motorcyclists and off-road vehicle users. Anglers can try local streams, and the surrounding Caribou-Targhee National Forest offers broader opportunities biking, boating, picnicking, wildlife viewing and winter sports among them so plan activities according to the season. For current fees, reservation options and seasonal access, contact the Caribou-Targhee National Forest or the local ranger district before you go, and expect to access the campground from Highway 36 (the paved approach requires a left-hand turn to enter).
