South Meadows Campground sits in a stand of ponderosa pines at about 8,000 feet and offers 63 individual campsites laid out along paved roads; 60 sites accept both RVs and tents, one is RV-only and two are tent-only. Each site includes a metal campfire ring and a picnic table, and vault toilets plus drinking water are available throughout the loop (note: facilities are reduced outside peak season). A campground host is on duty, and the setting opens to the north onto Manitou Lake, a small five-acre waterbody where anglers commonly fish; Trout Creek is another nearby fishing spot. Weather at this elevation tends toward warm days, cool nights, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms in summer, so come prepared for rapid changes and plan campfires accordingly. For access, South Meadows is about five miles north of Woodland Park on Highway 67 and is roughly an easy half-hour drive west from Colorado Springs along Highway 24, where you'll find gas, groceries and dining in Woodland Park. Recreation at South Meadows centers on easy access to the paved, multipurpose 4.2-mile Centennial Trail, which connects the campground to Manitou Lake Picnic Area and Colorado Campground and is popular with hikers, bicyclists and inline skaters. Off-road riders head to the nearby Rainbow Falls and North Divide OHV systems, while day-trippers use South Meadows as a base for Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods, and a visit to the U.S. Air Force Academy. The broader Pike and San Isabel National Forests and the Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands offer additional opportunities boating, climbing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and long trail routes such as the Continental Divide and Colorado Trail but check trail and access conditions before you go. Reservations are managed through Recreation.gov; cancellations up to two days before your start date incur a $10 service fee, cancellations the day before or on arrival also pay $10 and forfeit the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeited in full), and no-shows are charged a $20 service fee plus the first night's rate and taxes. Refund requests must be submitted within seven days after the reservation end date and are returned to the original payment method (cash or check refunds are issued by Treasury check and may take 6 8 weeks); in the event of an emergency closure, all fees will be refunded. Finally, if you plan to fly an unmanned aircraft (drone), be aware federal Forest Service rules apply and recreational drone users must follow applicable laws and agency policies.
