Perched above Rampart Reservoir on the Front Range north of Pikes Peak, Thunder Ridge Campground sits at about 9,200 feet among ponderosa pine with pockets of spruce, Douglas fir, aspen and open meadows. The campground is one of two within the Rampart Reservoir Recreation Area and offers 20 campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs; each site includes a picnic table, campfire ring and access to drinking water. Most sites are set below road level and reached by steps down from the road, so mobility considerations are important three campsites and two vault toilets meet current accessibility standards. The reservoir below is a focal point for recreation: rainbow and mackinaw trout are commonly caught, boating is popular off the small boat ramps, and the nearby Rampart Reservoir Trail (about 14 miles) provides hiking and mountain biking options that thread into the surrounding national forest and grasslands. Getting here is straightforward from the Colorado Springs area Thunder Ridge is reached via Rampart Range Road off Highway 24 near Woodland Park and the U.S. Air Force Academy and the mountain town of Green Mountain Falls make easy day trips from camp. Practical details to plan around: firewood is available for purchase on-site, vault toilets are provided, and there are no stated hookups or additional services beyond drinking water and the listed facilities. Reservations and cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov: canceling at least two days before arrival incurs a $10 fee, canceling the day before or on arrival carries a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeit the full amount), and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate; refund requests must be submitted within seven days after checkout. Visitors should also be aware that unmanned aircraft (drones) are regulated on these public lands and must be operated in compliance with Forest Service rules.
