What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (160 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“been going to lodgepole for 6+ years, in general have had a great experience, but we had a pretty bad encounter with a camp host that was unreasonably rude.”

Chris S 1 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Great area ,we have been going there for years.Always clean restrooms.Campfire ring was pretty full.Host stopped by to say she hadn’t cleaned because of the rain the day before.Could have come back to clean it but never did.Small thing.”

Ronald R 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“The campgrounds were clean, shaded and beautiful. Even though they do not have flushing toilets, they are clean and well maintained. We love the lake and streams around this area. ”

Tresa M 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

About

Lodgepole Campground sits along Jefferson Creek in a narrow valley at about 9,900 feet, surrounded by groves of aspen and mixed conifers and facing Jefferson Hill and towering 12,000-foot peaks. The campground is roughly three miles south of Jefferson Lake, a high-elevation reservoir (about 10,685 feet) with deep, cold water that freezes in winter; the lake has a boat ramp and is managed as a no-wake lake, while the creek below the campground holds rainbow, brown, mackinaw and brook trout for anglers. Hikers and riders will appreciate direct access to the Colorado Trail the long-distance route that runs from Denver to Durango as well as the nearby West Jefferson Loop Trail, an 11-mile route that reaches the Continental Divide; the surrounding Pike, San Isabel and grassland landscapes also support biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and backcountry exploration. The developed campground offers 33 reservable sites in a single loop: 25 sites equipped to accommodate both RVs and tents and 8 tent-only sites. Parking aprons are gravel and dirt and sites are limited to RVs up to 30 feet; each site includes a picnic table and grill, with vault toilets and drinking water available within the campground. Reservations and fee policies are administered through Recreation.gov: cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee, same-day or day-before cancellations pay a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount), and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's rate; refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after the end of your reservation. To reach Lodgepole from US Highway 285 at Jefferson, follow County Road 35 north and turn onto County Road 37, pay the user fee at the Jefferson Lake Recreation Area entrance station and continue to the campground; for facility questions call (661) 702-1420. Finally, be aware that unmanned aircraft (drones) are regulated on these public lands and must be used in accordance with Forest Service and federal rules.
