Jefferson Creek Campground sits high in the Pike and San Isabel landscape at about 10,100 feet, threaded with mixed conifers and looking down toward Jefferson Creek and, a mile away, Jefferson Lake a deep, cold 182-acre reservoir that tops out at 10,685 feet and is rimmed by steep 12,000-foot peaks. The site is a straightforward choice for anglers and trail users: trout anglers can expect rainbow, brown, mackinaw and brook trout in both the creek and the lake, and motorized boats are allowed on Jefferson Lake under a no-wake restriction. Two trailheads nearby give you direct access to long-distance and local routes the Colorado Trail (the 471-mile Denver-to-Durango route) and the West Jefferson Loop, an 11-mile footpath that climbs toward the Continental Divide so hikers, bikers and horseback riders will find plenty of route options. Wildlife viewing and picnicking are easy to combine with a day of fishing or a short drive into Fairplay and the South Park City Museum for a dose of local history. The campground has 16 reservable sites in total: 13 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites. Campsites have gravel parking aprons (maximum RV length 25 feet), picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets and drinking water the basics you need for a comfortable, small-mountain campground. Before you go, note the Reservation/Cancellation rules: cancellations made at least two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or on arrival incurs a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee (a one-night reservation that is cancelled forfeits the full amount); no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and the first night's rate is forfeited. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends, and in the event of an emergency closure all fees will be refunded. Pay the user fee at the Jefferson Lake Recreation Area entrance station when you arrive, and call the facility for site-specific questions at (661) 702-1420. Finally, if you plan to fly a drone, be aware that unmanned aircraft are regulated on these lands and must follow Forest Service and federal rules.
