Prospector Campground sits at about 9,000 feet in Summit County within the White River National Forest, and its open sites look out across Dillon Reservoir and the surrounding mountain ranges. The campground contains 106 sites that can accommodate both RVs and tents, spread across five loops (Loop A: 12 sites; Loop B: 14 sites; Loop C: 19 sites; Loop D: 34 sites; Loop E: 27 sites). Roads and spurs through the campground are unpaved, and because hazard trees were removed after a pine beetle outbreak there is little or no natural shade; plan for sun exposure and wind. Each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring, and the campground provides vault toilets and drinking water there are no electrical hookups. Hosts sell firewood on site, and boat ramp access is available nearby at the marinas in Frisco and Dillon. For location, the campground is reached by driving east from I-70/Silverthorne on Highway 6 (about 4 miles), turning onto Swan Mountain Road for roughly 2 miles, and then following a 1-mile dirt road to the entrance; seasonal road and weather conditions at this elevation can affect access, so check current conditions before you travel. Reservations and any associated fees are handled through Recreation.gov; note that once your reservation start date has begun neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify your reservation. Recreation centers on Dillon Reservoir sometimes called Lake Dillon which covers 3,233 acres and offers 26.8 miles of shoreline for boating, sailing and shore fishing. The lake supports healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout, with occasional cutthroat in feeder streams, and marina boat launches in Frisco and Dillon make water access straightforward. Land-based options include more than 7 miles of paved segments of Summit County's larger 50-mile trail network for biking and walking, and the short Old Dillon Reservoir trail gives easy, high-value views of the Tenmile Range and the Continental Divide while tracing the history of the original 1930s reservoir. If you want quieter backcountry time, the Ptarmigan Wilderness is nearby for longer hikes and more solitude. Wildlife viewing is a regular part of the experience here bighorn sheep on ridgelines, elk at dusk, and alpine inhabitants such as pika and ptarmigan and the broader White River National Forest supports a wide range of activities from auto touring, biking and boating to fishing, horseback riding, winter sports and interpretive programs. Several ski areas (Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge and Copper Mountain) are within about 10 miles of Dillon Reservoir and remain active year-round, making Prospector a convenient base whether your interest is on the water, on a trail, or on the slopes.
