About

Heaton Bay Campground sits at about 9,000 feet on the shores of Dillon Reservoir, a high-elevation basecamp for anglers, trail users, and winter-sport visitors. Sites are exposed there is little or no shade because of recent pine beetle impacts and the removal of hazard trees which leaves broad, unobstructed views across the 3,233-acre reservoir and toward surrounding ranges, including the Tenmile Range and the Continental Divide. Wildlife is part of the setting: trout populate the reservoir and feeder streams, and the broader White River National Forest supports elk, bighorn sheep, pika, and ptarmigan in its undeveloped areas. The campground is close to the towns of Frisco and Dillon and lies just off the Dillon Dam Road a short drive from I-70, putting downhill ski areas such as Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain within roughly 10 miles of the water those resorts operate year-round, so Heaton Bay can be a convenient camping hub for both summer boating and shoulder-season or winter activities. Facilities and practical details are straightforward and aimed at a range of campers: Heaton Bay contains 84 total campsites 51 are set up for both RVs and tents, 14 are RV-only, and 19 are tent-only with two named loops noted on the campground map (LOPA holds 9 sites and LOPE holds 25). Walk-in tent sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring; the campground provides vault toilets and potable drinking water, and guests can fill RV tanks on site. Electrical hookups are available at several sites for a fee, and firewood is sold by the campground hosts. Heaton Bay gives direct access to reservoir recreation Dillon Reservoir offers 26.8 miles of shoreline and supports healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout (and a few cutthroat) while nearby paved sections of the Summit County trail system (more than 7 miles locally) and the short Old Dillon Reservoir Trail provide easy hiking and biking with good views. For greater solitude, hikers can push into the Ptarmigan Wilderness. Note the reservation policy: once your reservation start date has begun, neither Recreation.gov nor the campground manager can modify that reservation, so plan changes accordingly.
