“Very nice and quiet campground. Toilets are very clean. The host Billy did great job to maintain the campground. We need more hosts like Billy!”
“Campground was beautiful and very well maintained. Each site had plenty of space, and reasonable privacy. Only complaint is the lack of bear boxes; there was 1 for every 2-3 sites. ”
“The biggest problem was the restrooms were really bad. Pretty sure they had not been cleaned in over a week.”

Aspen Campground sits at about 9,900 feet along Jefferson Creek, a few miles downstream from Jefferson Lake (which itself sits near 10,685 feet and is ringed by steep 12,000-foot peaks). The single-loop campground is shaded by groves of aspen and mature spruce, and offers close access to two prominent trail systems: the Colorado Trail a 471-mile route crossing the state from Denver to Durango and the West Jefferson Loop Trail, an 11-mile footpath that climbs toward the Continental Divide. Anglers will find trout fishing in both the creek and the lake with rainbow, brown, mackinaw and brook trout reported; Jefferson Lake allows no-wake boating and has a boat ramp, and the area's mix of high meadow and subalpine forest makes for good wildlife viewing, day hikes, and rides for bicyclists and horseback riders on nearby trails. The campground contains 11 sites in a compact loop: five sites configured to take both RVs and tents and six tent-only sites, with gravel parking aprons that fit up to two vehicles. Amenities are basic but functional picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets and drinking water from a hand pump and the site is best suited to self-contained, low-service camping. Access from Fairplay is by Highway 285 north to Jefferson and a short drive on local county roads; be aware that roads into the Jefferson Lake Recreation Area are not maintained for snow and the site can be difficult or impossible to reach in winter. Reservations and fee policies follow Recreation.gov rules: cancellations up to two days before a reservation incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or on arrival triggers a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeit the full amount), no-shows are assessed a $20 fee plus forfeiture of the first night, and refund requests must be submitted within seven days after the reservation ends. For facility-specific questions call (661) 702-1420.
