Bushytail Campground sits among tall Douglas firs and Ponderosa pines on the shores of Trinity Lake, at roughly 2,370 feet elevation, making it an easy waterside base for single families and small groups. The campground contains 12 total campsites; all 12 are configured to serve both RVs and tents, and most sites include electric and water hookups with paved parking spurs for easy access and level setups. Each campsite comes with a grill, a bear-proof food locker, a campfire ring and a picnic table; flush toilets, drinking water and two coin-operated showers are on site. From camp it's under a mile to the Clark Springs public boat ramp, so boating, water skiing, sailing, swimming and fishing are immediate options anglers often target catfish as well as salmon, trout and bass and the 4-mile Trinity Lakeshore Trail begins nearby at Clark Springs Campground for lakeside hikes. The campground is on Forest Service roads north of Weaverville: follow Highway 3 about 16 miles toward Minersville/Bushytail and turn in at the campground entrance. Bushytail is part of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area within Shasta-Trinity National Forest, the largest national forest in California, where auto touring, climbing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and winter sports are available across a varied landscape of lakes, streams and peaks. Black bears are frequently seen in this area (you'll also find bobcats, mountain lions and many bird species), so use the provided bear-proof lockers and keep food secured. Reservations through Recreation.gov carry policies you should note: refund requests for a full refund (excluding Recreation.gov fees) must be made at least 14 days before arrival by calling 1-877-444-6777; an additional non-refundable reservation fee of $10 applies to call center and online reservations. Cash or check refunds are issued by mail and processed within 30 days contact the local office at 530-275-8113 and in the event of an emergency closure Recreation.gov will attempt to offer alternate dates or will cancel and refund fees; refunds are not issued for naturally occurring events such as weather, smoke, or low lake levels.
