“Spot #69 was nice and flat. Perfect spot to place multiple tents. Short walk to the water. Will definitely be visiting again. ”

About

Hayward Flat sits along one of Trinity Lake's more active arms, shaded by Ponderosa pines and Douglas firs and threaded with reminders of the area's Placer mining past interpretive signs and scattered relics make the campground part outdoor basecamp, part informal history stop. Water is the draw: the Dogwood and Elderberry loops (22 and 18 sites respectively) offer lake views and informal boat mooring, while a boat ramp and marina are about three miles away for larger launches; water-skiing, power and non-motorized boating, swimming and fishing are the day-to-day rhythm here. Anglers can expect catfish plus a mix of bass, trout and salmon depending on season, and wildlife is commonly seen black bears are frequently spotted in the area along with bobcats, mountain lions and a variety of birds so food storage and caution around wildlife are essential. The surrounding Shasta-Trinity National Forest spans a wide elevation range (roughly 1,000 to 14,162 feet) and Trinity Lake itself sits at about 2,370 feet, framed by the Trinity Alps and offering access to broader activities such as hiking, auto touring, climbing, horseback riding and winter recreation across the forest's 2.1 million acres. The campground contains 84 total campsites suitable for both RVs and tents, laid out in four loops Buckeye (20 sites), Chinquapin (18 sites), Dogwood (22 sites) and Elderberry (18 sites) each site with a paved spur, picnic table and campfire ring; most sites also include bear-proof food storage lockers. Park amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, and an amphitheater where seasonal interpretive programs are offered (dates posted at the site). Practical details to know before you go: reservations made through Recreation.gov carry a non-refundable $10 reservation fee for call-center and online bookings, and full refunds must be requested through Recreation.gov no later than 14 days before arrival (call 1-877-444-6777). Cash or check refunds are issued by check and processed within 30 days call the local office at 530-275-8113 for those requests or for walk-up site refund issues; emergency closures will prompt attempts to rebook or refund, but refunds are not issued for naturally occurring conditions like rain, wind, smoke, extreme temperatures or low lake levels. Hayward Flat is reached from the historic town of Weaverville about 15 miles north on Highway 3 with a short drive to the Hayward turnoff and campground entrance, making it convenient for combining a lakeside stay with the restaurants, shops and walking tours of this registered historic town.
