YUBA RIVER RANGER STATION
Open in Google Maps ↗
Indian Valley Campground sits on the north bank of the North Yuba River just off Highway 49 on the Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway, roughly 11 miles from Downieville. This compact facility operated by Tahoe National Forest contains 16 campsites that are configured as single and double family units and can accommodate both tents and RVs; each site includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring. Basic services are provided: vault toilets and drinking water are on site (no electrical or sewer hookups are listed). The river runs close enough that many campsites have direct views, and the grounds are threaded with piles of tumbled rock left from historical gold dredging, set beneath a mixed canopy of oak, fir, pine and madrone that offers dappled shade through the day. Outdoor options cluster right around Indian Valley: the North Yuba is a popular spot for swimming, wading and rainbow trout fishing, while seasonal rafting, kayaking and tubing draw paddlers when flows permit. A network of trails for hiking, mountain biking and motorcycle singletrack gives riders and hikers access to routes such as the Yuba River, Halls Ranch, Butcher Ranch and the Downieville Downhill trail system. Highway 49 itself is a stretch of gold rush history interpretive signs, old mining towns like Camptonville, Goodyears Bar and Downieville, and other nearby draws such as New Bullards Bar Reservoir and the Indian Valley Outpost are all within easy driving distance. Practicalities: campsites are reservable and subject to the Forest Service no-show rules where recorded, a no-show incurs a $20 fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee so callers en route are advised to notify the facility; there's no change fee for extending or shortening reservations that keep at least some original dates, and site changes between equal-priced sites won't carry a fee (price differences will be reconciled).
