Schoolhouse Campground sits on the shores of Bullards Bar Reservoir in the northern reaches of Tahoe National Forest at about 2,000 feet elevation, roughly 20 21 miles north of Nevada City via Highway 49 and Marysville Road. The reservoir itself stretches more than 16 miles with over 60 miles of shoreline, and the immediate landscape is a mix of conifer and hardwood forest with plenty of shade at sites and generally steep reservoir banks that limit easy shore access in many places. The campground contains 55 sites, all of which are designated to accommodate both RVs and tents, and is one of five campgrounds around the reservoir; the larger recreation area also includes two picnic areas, two developed boat launch ramps (the Cottage Creek launch at Emerald Cove Marina and the Dark Day launch) plus an undeveloped launch at the end of Moran Road, a marina, an overlook and several developed hiking trails. Trail options in the vicinity range from short connector trails like the 0.7-mile Schoolhouse Trail to longer routes such as the 14-mile Bullards Bar Trailhead route, and maps are available at the North Yuba Ranger Station a couple of miles east on Marysville Road. Recreation at Bullards Bar and in Tahoe National Forest is diverse: boaters and anglers will find year-round fishing and places to water-ski or explore coves by boat (swimming is possible in some sheltered spots but is limited by the steep slopes), while trails and forest roads support hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and, across the broader forest, activities such as off-highway vehicle use and hunting where permitted. Supplies for a stay can be obtained at the marina or in nearby small towns like Camptonville, North San Juan and Dobbins. Practical details to know before you go: reservation and cancellation rules follow the forest's standard policies there's no change fee when you extend or shorten a reservation provided the new dates include days from the original reservation, but early departures can forfeit some or all recreation fees; changing to a campsite at the same price on the same dates does not incur a change fee, while switching to a site with a price difference will require settling that difference. The forest enforces a no-show policy at staffed facilities: a recorded no-show is charged a $20.00 no-show fee and forfeits the first night's recreation fee (day-use no-shows forfeit the entire day-use fee). If you are delayed en route, the office recommends contacting the facility so they can avoid recording a no-show where possible.
