“We had site 7 and it has the best view in the whole campground! Despite there not being an on site camp host, the bathroom was spotless and had no odor whatsoever. Great trail and beach area. We never left the campground.”
“It’s such a great spot, very nice right on the water, toilets are pretty clean and garbage taken out regularly.”

YUBA RIVER RANGER STATION
Open in Google Maps ↗
Rocky Rest Campground sits on the north bank of the North Yuba River, about 11 miles south of Downieville along Highway 49 (the Yuba Donner Scenic Byway). The small footprint just 10 sites in total puts you close to the river and to a trailhead for the North Yuba Trail, a 7.5-mile route that welcomes hikers and mountain bikers. Each campsite accommodates both tents and RVs and comes with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; vault toilets and drinking water are available on site. A mixed forest of Douglas fir, pine, and oak shades the loop, but sites are placed close enough that privacy is limited. At the water's edge you'll find a small rocky beach and a swimming hole, making this an easy spot to cool off after a ride or a hike. The river is a local hub for rainbow trout fishing, swimming, floating and seasonal whitewater recreation rafting, kayaking and tubing are common during higher flows while the surrounding public lands offer miles of multiuse singletrack and backcountry opportunities for horseback riding, hunting and off-highway vehicle use across Tahoe National Forest. Historic gold-rush towns and interpretive sites line Highway 49 nearby Downieville, Goodyears Bar and Camptonville are all short drives away and other points of interest include New Bullards Bar Reservoir and the Indian Valley Outpost. The campground is managed by Tahoe National Forest; keep in mind the facility's reservation policies such as the no-show rules (where recorded, a $20 no-show fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee may apply), that there's no change fee when modifying dates within an existing reservation, and that early departures can result in forfeited fees. If you're delayed, contact the facility staff can sometimes prevent a no-show fee if they know you're en route.
