“Camp was easy to get into. Our spot, #12, was great!! Near the bathrooms, which were clean and maintained daily. Perfect access to the water from camp. 10 out of 10 ill stay here again on my way through. ”
“Site was great! Be prepared for the dust to go everywhere if you got a dog tagging along”

YUBA RIVER RANGER DISTRICT
Open in Google Maps ↗
Carlton Campground sits along the banks of the North Yuba River just off Highway 49, roughly 13 miles south of Downieville. The site runs right up to the highway, so you'll notice the road as part of the scene, but the campground is shaded by stands of cedar, ponderosa pine and oak that help temper the afternoon sun. There are 17 total campsites at Carlton, all single-family sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and each site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring. Basic infrastructure on-site includes vault toilets and a drinking-water source; there are no other hookups or developed utilities listed, and the Tahoe National Forest operates and maintains the facility. Recreation centers on the North Yuba River: swimming and wading are easy from shore, rainbow trout fishing is a common draw, and seasonal rafting and kayaking use stretches of the river when flows allow. A nearby trail network opens opportunities for hiking, biking and off-highway-vehicle use, and the North Yuba River Trail is reachable from the Rocky Rest trailhead a short drive away. Carlton's location also makes it convenient for auto touring, picnicking and wildlife viewing, and hunters and horseback riders use surrounding public lands in season. Practical details to note before you go: campground reservations and changes follow the Tahoe National Forest policies there's no change fee when an extension or shortening includes dates from the original reservation, and switching to a same-price site on the same dates carries no fee, but you'll be responsible for any price difference if sites differ. If you depart early you may forfeit some or all recreation fees; where facilities record no-shows, a $20 no-show fee is assessed and the first night's fee is forfeited, so contact the ranger station if you're delayed to avoid that charge.
