“Great site, very large, room for a big group. Too bad there was a dog next door that barked non-stop. Please leave your barking dogs at home.”

Hornswoggle Group Campground sits on the forested shores above Bullards Bar Reservoir in Tahoe National Forest at about 2,000 feet elevation, roughly a 20 25 minute drive north from Nevada City via Highway 49 and Marysville Road. The reservoir itself stretches over 16 miles with more than 60 miles of shoreline and a surface area of 4,760 acres, and the steep, wooded banks of conifer and hardwoods mean most campsites are shaded and set into a natural, canyon-like landscape. The campground is small six sites in total five of which accommodate both RVs and tents and one designated for RVs only, so parties looking for a compact, low-density base for lake activities will find it convenient; note that public access along the reservoir is constrained by the steep slopes, so many boaters launch at designated ramps rather than wandering shoreline swim spots. For recreation, Bullards Bar is a multi-use playground: boating, water skiing and other water sports dominate the reservoir, and fishing is available year-round for cold- and warm-water species. Swimming is possible but limited by the steep banks, so most people launch from one of the developed ramps Cottage Creek at Emerald Cove Marina and Dark Day or use the undeveloped launch at the end of Moran Road; the area also supports mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking and wildlife viewing. Facilities around the reservoir include five campgrounds, two picnic areas, a marina, an overlook, a day-use area and several developed trails (Bullards Bar Trailhead, 7 Ball, 8 Ball, Rebel Ridge and Schoolhouse Trail range from 0.7 to 14 miles), and maps are available at the North Yuba Ranger Station a few miles east on Marysville Road. Supplies can be picked up at the marina or in the nearby communities of Camptonville, North San Juan and Dobbins. If you have a reservation, be aware of the forest's standard policies: there's no change fee for extending or shortening reservations when dates remain within the original booking, site swaps of equal price on the same dates don't incur fees, but recorded no-shows are charged a $20 fee and forfeit the first night's recreation fee (staffed sites only); if you'll be delayed, contact the facility to avoid a no-show assessment.
