Cottage Creek Campground is a compact, recently built site sitting on the shoreline above Bullards Bar Reservoir, with nine campsites in total each configured as both RV and tent sites and offered in double and triple layouts to accommodate car-campers and small groups. The camp road is narrow and the loop sits a short distance off Marysville Road at the Emerald Cove/Cottage Creek marina area, so expect a quick, slightly tight drive in from Highway 49 north of Nevada City. The surrounding terrain is a mix of conifer and hardwood forest with underbrush between sites, which provides plenty of shade despite the reservoir's generally steep banks; many sites have clear sightlines down to the water. Facilities around the cove are new, and the immediate area includes picnic spots, an overlook and access to the marina; the campground itself is one of six in this particular Bullards Bar grouping and is small enough that it feels like a focused base for water-based recreation rather than a large resort. The reservoir setting shapes what you can do here: boating, water skiing and other motorized water sports are the main draws since public shore access is limited by steep slopes, though boaters commonly jump in where coves allow; swimming from shore is more restricted. Bullards Bar offers year-round fishing for warm- and cold-water species, and the area supports hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing on a nearby non-motorized trail system five trails range from about three-quarters of a mile to 14 miles, with maps available at the North Yuba Ranger Station a few miles east on Marysville Road. Public boat access in the immediate area includes two developed launch ramps (the Cottage Creek launch at Emerald Cove Marina and the Dark Day launch) plus an undeveloped launch at the end of Moran Road; the marina and the nearby communities of Camptonville, North San Juan and Dobbins carry basic supplies. Practical notes: reservations and arrival policies are enforced at staffed sites no-shows can be charged a $20 fee and may forfeit the first night's fee and changes that keep original dates aren't hit with change fees, though early departures may affect refunds. If you're en route and running late, contact the facility to avoid a no-show assessment.
