Texas Flats Campground remains closed due to hazard trees, so plan around that restriction and check with the Bass Lake Ranger District before making any arrangements. When open, Texas Flats is a small, group-oriented site on the banks of McGilvery Creek in the Highway 41 corridor of the Bass Lake Ranger District of Sierra National Forest, north of Oakhurst. There are 4 campsites total, and all four are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; each site is large enough for groups, holding roughly 20 30 people, and is equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings. Facilities are basic: vault toilets are provided but there is no potable water on-site, so bring drinking water, and while the campground is horse-friendly and nearby forest and logging roads serve as equestrian trails, there are no corrals or other horse facilities at the campground itself. The setting is middle-elevation Sierra Nevada forest oak-covered foothills giving way to denser mixed-conifer stands and the campground sits close enough to sequoia groves to make day trips practical. The 1-mile Shadow of the Giants hike through a stand of giant sequoias is a short drive northwest, and the Nelder Grove is also nearby; Yosemite National Park and the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad are realistic day-trip options from this corridor. The scenic Sky Ranch Road (part of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway) and a network of forest roads open opportunities for riding and hiking; statewide activities in the Sierra National Forest include hiking and overnight stays in fire lookouts/cabins (check availability). Because Texas Flats is on Forest Service roads and currently closed for safety reasons, confirm seasonal openings, fees, reservation policies and any vehicle or trailer access restrictions with the Bass Lake Ranger District before you go.
