Kelty Meadow Campground sits at about 3,400 feet in the Bass Lake Ranger District of Sierra National Forest, shaded by pine and cedar trees along Kelty Creek. The campground has 18 sites total: nine that are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and nine tent-only sites, with campsite footprints generally wide and open enough for small horse trailers, slide-ins or tent trailers. Every site includes a picnic table, campfire ring and grill; vault toilets are on-site, but there is no potable drinking water, so you should bring your own. The campground is horse-friendly some sites have hitching posts and stock water is available from the creek so it's a practical option for equestrian outings as well as more conventional camping. Access is on Forest Road 632 (Sky Ranch Road) off Highway 41 north of Oakhurst; from the Highway 41 turn you'll follow about 11 miles of forest road to reach Kelty Meadow (roughly 14 miles from Oakhurst overall). Note the reservation policy: "Once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation," and seasonal openings and fees are listed on Recreation.gov, so check there before you go. Recreation at Kelty Meadow centers on horses and easy access to nearby Bass Lake. From the campground you can ride logging and forest roads through the surrounding forest; for water recreation, Bass Lake's beach and boat ramp are a short drive away and support swimming, motorized boating, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, sailing and fishing for bass, trout, bluegill and catfish. A trailhead for the Shadow of the Giants National Recreation Trail lies a few miles south, offering a one-mile interpretive walk among giant sequoias, and the wider Sierra National Forest provides numerous hiking opportunities (and, where available elsewhere in the forest, overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins). Wildlife is part of the scene here too bald and golden eagles are known to frequent the Bass Lake area so plan accordingly for food storage and bring layers for variable mountain weather.
