“The camp site was listed as a site for a large tent. Upon arrival the site we had did not have a space large enough for our tent... and on a good slop. Very beautiful and peaceful. Would camp here again. But will make sure the camp site is flat! :)”

OLD LITTLE GRASS VALLEY ROAD
Open in Google Maps ↗
Running Deer Campground sits on the eastern shore of Little Grass Valley Reservoir in the Northern Sierra Nevada at about 5,000 feet, surrounded by stands of pine and fir that give many sites a sheltered, woodsy feel while a number of campsites look straight across the water. The site map contains 41 single-family campsites, each designed for both RVs and tents and fitted with paved parking spurs, picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. You'll find flush toilets, drinking water, and trash collection throughout the campground; there are no utility hookups, so plan for self-contained power and water if you need them. A public boat ramp is located inside the campground for easy lake access. The nightly fee is $23 per site check the Forest Service or recreation.gov for current reservation and cancellation rules and for seasonal opening dates and road-condition notices before you go. The reservoir itself covers roughly 1,615 acres and is the focal point for most daytime activity: anglers chase trout and kokanee salmon, while boaters, swimmers and water-skiers take advantage of long summer days on the water. A 14.5-mile Lakeshore Trail loops around the lake and is open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders; that trail also links to the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail for longer backcountry excursions. Several other campgrounds and a group of cabins sit on the south side of the lake, and the wider area is a popular snowmobiling zone in winter, so expect very different conditions by season. If you want to explore beyond the reservoir, quiet Fowler Lake about 12 miles northeast at 5,446 feet is a short side trip. Access to Running Deer is via the La Porte/Forbestown roads east of Oroville (follow Highway 162 toward La Porte and the recreation area signs); because these are forest roads, check for seasonal closures and current road conditions before heading in.
