Nancy K ★ 4 · Sep 2025The was no water at Cooper's Gulch when I was there. But, the fee was the same. Shame on you. Site 4 is still labeled as a double site and it should not. It's a single site. Finally since the locals know the camp host never comes around I saw a couple from Hayfork stay 3 nights without paying. Two other couples also stayed without paying. I was at Cooper's Gulch 5 days and 4 nights. I saw the host once. He collected fees from the iron ranger but never came through the campground. Overall, I give the host a D. Even with an absentee camp host an no water Cooper's Gulch is still a beautiful campground.
Mellissa B ★ 4 · Aug 2025Fantastic location and views :)
Paige R ★ 4 · Jul 2025We had a great time until a group of 30 people, who weren't camping, took over the picnic benches and whole area to get into the water. I feel like that area shouldn't be open to the public, but only to the people who are paying to camp. One of the reasons we chose this campsite was because there are only 5 sites and it sounded very secluded. Otherwise it's a great spot and we really enjoyed it! Looking forward to our next visit!

Cooper Gulch Campground sits right at the water's edge of Lewiston Lake, about 3 4 miles north of the small town of Lewiston and roughly 17 miles from Weaverville, with sites tucked into a mixed stand of conifer and deciduous trees that bloom with wildflowers in season. Lewiston Lake itself is roughly 5 miles long, about 70 feet at its deepest point, and lies at an elevation of 1,902 feet; every campsite has a direct view of the lake. The setting is compact and quiet, making it especially attractive to anglers and paddlers rainbow trout are abundant while brown and brook trout are commonly caught, and the lake's calm water and 10 mph motor-boat limit make it ideal for float tubes, fly-fishing, kayaks and canoes. Pine Cove boat ramp is within about four miles and the Fairview launching area on Trinity Lake is about nine miles to the north. There's also nearby access to the Baker Gulch Trail for a short shoreline hike and good opportunities for wildlife viewing. The campground is very small: there are five paved campsites in total, and each of the five sites is configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; every site includes a picnic table and a fire ring. The Cooper Gulch day-use area provides five parking spaces for people who come just to fish or access the trail. Because sites are limited, reservations are wise an additional nonrefundable reservation fee of $10 is charged for call-center and online bookings. If you booked through Recreation.gov and need a refund, call 1-877-444-6777; full refunds (minus Recreation.gov fees) must be requested no later than 14 days before your scheduled arrival. Cash or check refunds are issued by check and are processed within 30 days; contact the forest office at 530-275-8113 for those requests or for walk-up site refund questions (you can also speak to the on-site host). In the event of an emergency closure Recreation.gov will try to notify users and offer alternates or cancel and refund fees; refunds will not be issued for naturally occurring events such as rain, snow, wind, smoke, extreme temperatures, or low lake level. For up-to-date seasonal openings, access conditions, or additional questions about what the sites can accommodate, check Recreation.gov or call the forest office before you go.
