Upper Sage Flat sits along Big Pine Creek at the base of a narrow canyon about 9 miles west of the town of Big Pine, accessible from US Highway 395 by turning onto Big Canyon Road (Crocker Street) and following it out of town. The campground contains 20 sites, all configured to serve both tents and RVs; most sites have paved parking aprons about 40 feet long. Campsites are scattered beneath Jeffrey pines and cottonwoods close to the creek, and the site loop includes basic comforts: flush toilets, drinking water, picnic tables and campfire rings. The creek is a central feature of the campground it offers places to swim and is stocked annually with trout and the close, compact layout makes it easy to keep an eye on kids or gear while you relax beside the water. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal openings, check the Inyo National Forest website or recreation.gov before you go. Activities here focus on water and mountain access: anglers can try for rainbow, brown, brook and alpers trout right in Big Pine Creek, while a nearby lake provides opportunities for powerboating. Hikers will appreciate that the Big Pine Creek Trail starts near the campground; this 1.5-mile footpath links to longer routes into the John Muir Wilderness and gives access toward the high-country around the Palisades Glacier, the southernmost glacier in the lower 48. If you want a broader day trip, the Inyo National Forest contains a range of notable places from Mammoth Lakes Basin and Mono Lake to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest on the White Mountains and additional fishing can be found at nearby Tinemaha Reservoir.
