“Bathrooms are very clean, for the most part the ohv'ers are respectful of the campers, quite a pleasant place ”

Alto Pit OHV Campground sits at about 6,200 feet at the foot of the Granite Mountain Wilderness Area, in a landscape defined by broken granite outcrops and pockets of ponderosa and limber pine, manzanita, oak and native grasses. Once an active gravel pit, the site now serves exclusively as a motorized recreation area: two pits (Main Pit and a smaller West Pit) anchor a roughly 20-mile trail network that ranges from technical lines for experienced riders to shorter, more forgiving loops that beginners can enjoy. Thumb Butte and Granite Mountain loom on the horizon Granite Mountain reaches 6,874 feet to the north so the setting feels rugged and open, with good sightlines for riders and plenty of rocky features to explore. If you want other kinds of outdoor options, Granite Basin Recreation Area is about a 15-minute drive northeast and offers fishing at Granite Basin Lake, hiking, horseback trails, bird-watching and day-use areas. The campground itself is compact and practical: there are 11 campsites (ten single-occupancy sites and one double-occupancy site), and all 11 are configured to accept both RVs and tents. Ten driveways are pull-through and one is a back-in, and site pads are gravel; some sites will fit an RV and an extra vehicle comfortably, while a few are snug. Each site includes a picnic table, campfire ring and tent space; the entrance area has a large ramada that can accommodate group gatherings up to 50 people. Facilities are basic three vault restrooms and two trash dumpsters and there are no electrical, water hookups or dump station. Day visitors who are not camping pay a $5 fee (Wednesdays are free for day-use). Reservations can be made through the national system (call 1-877-444-6777 or use the availability link), and for questions about conditions or seasonal closures contact the Bradshaw Ranger District at 1-928-443-8000.
