“Loved the pave roads and site. Enjoyed the amount of space between each site and the wooded setting. Nice lake and store down the road. Will be back. ”
“Trruly enjoy coming to Big Lake, Rainbow Campground this time of year (September). Leave are turning, deers are in the campsites, weather is perfect and the hosts are always friendly, expecially Tim and Thea Lee who just make you feel at home with their kindness. ”

Rainbow Campground sits within the Big Lake Recreation Area at about 9,000 feet in the White Mountains, shaded by stands of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, spruce and pockets of aspen. It's the largest campground in the Big Lake area and contains 121 campsites, each configured to accommodate both tents and RVs; among them are four double sites meant for larger groups (each can hold up to 16 people) and two single-unit accessible sites. Campsites are arranged in multiple loops around the lake approach, and a campground host is on-site to assist visitors. A small store a short walk from the loops sells gas, food, firewood and rents boats, so you can easily stock up or launch without heading back to town. Roads to the area are forest routes from Pinetop expect a mountain drive east toward Big Lake and then a brief forest-road approach to reach the campground. Because Rainbow sits right beside Big Lake (about 450 acres), fishing is a central draw: anglers commonly target rainbow, cutthroat, brook and Apache trout, and the nearby store's boat rentals make water access straightforward. The recreation area also supports hiking, mountain biking, birding and wildlife watching, and visitors can join educational programs at the local visitor center to learn more about the forest and its species. The broader Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest offers additional opportunities horse camping and horseback riding, OHV routes, picnicking, and even backcountry cabins and fire lookout stays where available. Summer days are typically cool compared with lower-elevation Arizona, but nights can be chilly and afternoon thunderstorms are possible; check current Forest Service information for seasonal road conditions, fees and reservation rules before you go.
