Hoyer Campground sits in a dense stand of ponderosa pine and aspen at about 8,300 feet in the White Mountains portion of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, less than a mile from the Greer Lakes and the Little Colorado River. The facility contains 90 campsites all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents arranged across four loops: Bear (16 sites), Beaver (16 sites), Grouse (28 sites) and Wildcat (20 sites). Sites are shaded and sit on beds of pine needles or grass, with gravel roads throughout the campground. Shower facilities and a dump station are open, and the on-site campground host sells bundled firewood and ice. For current fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability call the campground at (928) 537-8888; the campground is reached by traveling southeast from Show Low on Highway 260 and then south on Highway 373 toward Greer. Recreation here centers on water and forest: Greer Lakes and the nearby Little Colorado River are within walking distance for anglers pursuing rainbow, cutthroat, brook and brown trout, while a network of trails a short drive away makes day hikes easy. The campground runs guided nature walks and offers educational programs in its summer amphitheater on Saturday evenings, and the surrounding Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest provides extensive opportunities for biking, horseback riding and horse camping, OHV use, picnicking, wildlife viewing, overnight stays in historic fire lookouts or cabins, and longer backcountry trips. Summer days are typically pleasant because of the elevation but expect afternoon thunderstorms from late June through August and cool nights year-round; nearby Greer and Springerville supply gas, groceries, restaurants and equipment rentals for anything you don't bring with you.
