Apache Trout Campground sits on the edge of the Big Lake Recreation Area in the White Mountains at about 9,100 feet, surrounded by stands of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, spruce and aspen with high-elevation meadows opening between the trees. It's one of five campgrounds serving Big Lake and is geared toward groups as well as individual campers: the site inventory totals 63 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents, arranged across four areas Aspen Loop (sites 1 63) holds 43 sites, Oak Loop (sites 64 86) contains 18 sites, and there are two group areas listed as Fir Group (sites 87 110) and Pine Group (sites 111 124), each counted as a single group site. The facility mix includes about 22 double sites, more than 20 individual sites, and two larger group sites (one configured for roughly 50 people and another for about 100), and it's the only campground in the Big Lake recreation complex that offers full RV hookups. Flush toilets and showers on site add comfort after a day on the water or trails, and campsites vary from shady to mostly sunny depending on placement under the trees. Big Lake itself a 450-acre reservoir a short walk from the campground is the primary draw for boating and trout fishing: anglers come for rainbow, cutthroat, brook and Apache trout. Beyond the lake, the surrounding Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest offers a wide range of outdoor options, including hiking and mountain biking trails, horseback riding and horse camping, OHV opportunities on designated routes, picnicking, wildlife viewing and access to backcountry cabins and fire lookouts. To reach the campground from Pinetop follow Highway 260 east toward the High Country, then south on Highway 273 to the Big Lake entrance (Forest Road 8115); those directions put you squarely in the Big Lake Recreation Area. Because conditions, fees and reservation windows can change, check the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest or Recreation.gov pages for current information on reservations, seasonal openings and any access advisories before you go.
