Luna Lake Campground sits at about 8,000 feet in an open stand of ponderosa pines a short walk from the lake that gives the site its name. The campground fronts a 75-acre lake ringed by wetlands where waterfowl nest and where rainbow trout are regularly stocked; a boat ramp and a marina with a fishing pier, bait shop and boat rentals are clustered in the day-use area. Because the lake is used for irrigation later in the summer, fishing tends to be best in spring and early summer. Trails radiate from the area: a non-motorized system allows hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding (horses are allowed on some trails but livestock are not permitted inside the campground), and the larger Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest nearby offers additional options from scenic driving along the Coronado Trail to reach hiking, wildlife viewing and other backcountry experiences. The campground itself is rustic and manageable 32 campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs are arranged in the open pine stand, and three group sites are available for reservation (two double sites and one large site that holds up to 120 people). Basic amenities on site include drinking water and vault toilets; no additional hookups or services are listed. The gravel approach is Forest Road 570 off U.S. Highway 180 about five miles east of Alpine, with the campground located roughly one mile down that road. For current fees, reservation policies (group sites are reservable), seasonal availability and any road or vehicle advisories, call the facility at (928) 537-8888 before you go; Alpine provides the nearest services, and the Escudilla Wilderness and Coronado Trail Scenic Byway are convenient excursions from the area.
