Cove Lake Recreation Area spreads around a 160-acre mountain lake in the Arkansas River Valley portion of the Ozark National Forest, sitting within the broader Ozark St. Francis National Forests and lying roughly 15 miles south of Paris in Logan County. The shoreline and surrounding mixed mature forest give the site a distinctly wooded, mountain-lake character with Mount Magazine Arkansas's high point at about 2,700 feet rising nearby. The campground contains 21 sites in total: 20 sites designed to accommodate both RVs and tents and one site set aside for tent camping only. Each campsite comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; accessible flush toilets, hot showers and drinking water are provided at the facility. The recreation area also includes multiple lakeside picnic areas and a picnic shelter with electricity, plus a group shelter (a peak-season picnic pavilion was listed at $35 per day for 2019), so larger gatherings and day-use visits are supported check with the managing office for current fees and reservation options. Summer is prime time here, when visitors swim, water ski, boat and fish on the lake; a concrete boat ramp and an on-site concessionaire make boating easy, with boat, canoe and paddleboat rentals and other equipment available for purchase. Anglers will find catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie and perch; the lake is stocked on a biannual schedule, with a limited number of catfish added each year and extra stocking before the annual kids' fishing derby. Beyond on-water recreation, the area offers miniature golf and shoreline picnicking, and the surrounding Ozark St. Francis National Forests expand the options to include hiking, biking, horseback riding and horse camping, auto touring, hunting, interpretive programs, OHV trails, visitor centers and wildlife viewing plus opportunities to visit fire lookouts or overnight cabins on forest lands. The site is accessed via Highway 109 south of Paris and then southeast on Highway 309 toward Cove Lake, and because policies and seasonal services can change, it's a good idea to contact the forest or recreation office before you go for the latest on reservations, current fees and any seasonal restrictions.
