Waveland Park Campground sits on the shores of Blue Mountain Lake, in the shadow of Mt. Magazine Arkansas's highest peak and the tallest between the Rockies and the Alleghenies and combines open water access with a mix of pine and hardwood shoreline, wetlands and grasslands. The lake's setting, framed by farmland, rolling mountains and the nearby Ozark and Ouachita National Forests, creates a variety of places to explore: anglers will find bank fishing for crappie, largemouth and white bass, bream and catfish along the lakeshore; boaters and water-sports enthusiasts have a boat ramp and room to spread out on the water; and families can use the cypress-lined swimming area and playground. The J. Perry Mikels Blue Mountain Special Use Area at the west end of the lake has a bird dog field trial area that draws competitors and trainers from across the country and abroad, and the forests around the lake are open to hunting when in season. Activities listed for the area include boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, playground use, a specialized sport site, water sports and wildlife viewing. The campground itself has 52 total campsites: 51 sites equipped for both RVs and tents with electric and water hookups, and one tent-only site; the 51 hookup sites are shaded and are reservable. Onsite conveniences include hot showers, a dump station, a fish cleaning station and a day-use group picnic shelter that can accommodate up to 150 people. An amphitheater hosts educational programs seasonally, and the boat ramp makes it easy to launch for a day on the lake. Waveland Park is reached on the east side of Booneville near the small community of Waveland (about 17 miles east on State Highway 10 and a short drive off Highway 309 toward Blue Mountain Dam); for fees, seasonal availability, reservations and any access details check with the park office or local chambers of commerce before you go.
