“Three visits this year. This visit campground host not present until last morning. Overall still good upkeep; however, this year bathrooms not as up kept and some of the fireplaces need to be emptied. When host is present always pleasant.. ”

Tenderfoot Creek Campground sits on the eastern shore of Summit Lake on the eastern Kenai Peninsula in Chugach National Forest, where spruce- and hemlock-lined campsites look across a small cirque lake a tarn about 20 feet deep formed by an ancient alpine glacier. Tenderfoot Creek threads through the campground and the surrounding ridgelines provide mountain views from every direction; loons patrol morning waters and bald eagles are a frequent sight while larger residents include moose, brown and black bears, mountain goats, lynx and wolves. The campground has a TOTAL CAMPSITES: 35 27 both RV sites & tent sites and 8 tent sites most of which are spaced along the lake's eastern shore, with gravel parking aprons and a majority of pull-through sites that make rig maneuvering straightforward. Basic services on site include drinking water, vault toilets, picnic tables, trash collection, fire pits and a boat ramp, and firewood is available for purchase. Recreation centers on Summit Lake and the trail system: the lake is stocked with Dolly Varden and Rainbow trout for anglers and offers easy launching for kayaks and canoes from the boat ramp, while the Summit Lake Trail south of the lake links to the Resurrection Pass Trail a 39-mile route that climbs about 2,100 feet and is popular with hikers and bikepackers. In winter the area is used for backcountry skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing; across Chugach National Forest you'll also find opportunities for biking, camping, overnight stays in fire lookouts/cabins, hunting, water sports and other winter sports. For specifics on fees, reservations, seasonal availability, or local conditions (and for general information) call the local number at (907) 522-8368 or (907) 288-3178; because large mammals are present, plan to use bear-aware food storage and standard wildlife safety practices while camping. Nearby sights include the glacial remnants of the Portage Valley Explorer, Middle, Byron, Burns and Shakespeare glaciers for anyone wanting to extend their outing beyond Summit Lake.
