Granite Creek Campground sits along a glacier-fed stream in the Kenai Mountains, about an hour south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway (roughly 64 miles from town, near milepost 63). The 19 campsites all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents are spaced so you rarely feel crowded; most sites are right beside the creek, where the steady roar of glacial water competes with wind in a mature spruce stand and seasonal carpets of wildflowers. Bears are active in the area, so bear boxes are provided at the loop; beyond that, the landscape is classic Kenai Peninsula: rugged peaks rising from thick forest, patches of raspberries along trails and road shoulders, and occasional views of nearby glaciers. There's no published data here about hookups, potable water, or reservation rules in the provided description, so plan as a lightly developed forest campground and call ahead for current fee and reservation information. The campground is a convenient base for biking, hiking and fishing. A paved bike path runs alongside the Seward Highway for about five miles south to Hope Road, a popular stretch where riders often stop to pick raspberries and enjoy wildflower displays. Anglers should be prepared for intermediate-level fishing in Granite Creek and can expect species such as Dolly Varden trout. A mile east, the Johnson Pass Trail offers 23 miles of mostly level travel and expansive mountain views; for whitewater enthusiasts, Six Mile Creek nearby contains Class V runs. Wildlife viewing can turn up moose, snowshoe hare, black and brown bears and mountain goats. For local questions or the latest conditions, contact the Chugach National Forest local office at (907) 522-8368 or the general information line at (907) 228-3178. As part of Chugach National Forest, the broader area also supports activities from camping and hiking to hunting, water sports, winter sports and access to fire lookouts or cabins where available.
