“We chose mid-September to go camping here. The park was not filled to capacity, which was nice! It was a quiet few days, weather was good, some family joined us and camped nearby. Overall, we really like this campground. ”
“Roomy sites with a various degrees of seclusion feel. Day sites along the lake can be busy, but very nice to have the access. ”

Trail River Campground sits low on the eastern Kenai Peninsula at about 450 feet, tucked between the Trail River and Kenai Lake where hemlock and spruce give shade to campsites and frames the view of snow-creased peaks and avalanche chutes that often hold snow into late August. The developed campground contains 92 sites in all 72 sized for RVs and 20 for tent camping arranged in three named loops: Eagle Point (30 sites) looks out over Kenai Lake, River Terrace (29 sites) sits closest to the river, and Spruce Wood (32 sites) offers the most shade and mountain views; a single group site on the Trail River loop can accommodate up to 70 guests and includes a timber-frame picnic shelter with a large central grill, covered tables, a big fire ring, parking and nearby playground, volleyball and horseshoe areas. Basic amenities across the campground and day-use area include drinking water, vault toilets and trash collection; the Day Use Site also gives beach access to Kenai Lake for picnicking, skipping rocks and shoreline fishing. The campground is reached from the Seward Highway on the eastern side of the peninsula roughly 100 miles south of Anchorage, about 24 miles north of Seward and 40 miles east of Cooper Landing and the Seward Ranger District office is a short drive away for maps and local guidance. Trail River is a practical base for a wide range of activities: shoreline trout fishing right from the beach can be productive for Dolly Varden, rainbow and lake trout (anglers must carry a State of Alaska fishing license and follow regulations; special restrictions apply within a quarter-mile of inlet streams, and Kenai Lake is closed to salmon fishing). Miles of hiking and biking trails ring the campground; within about a mile of the entrance you'll find Falls Creek Trail, Crown Point Mine Road, Ptarmigan Creek Trail and Vagt Lake Trail, all of which tie into portions of the Iditarod National Historic Trail and allow for several loop hikes where bridges and connections exist. Motorized users can access the steep Falls Creek OHV Trail a half-mile north of the entrance and the historic Crown Point Mine Road about a mile away, which climbs toward treeline for broad views. Ptarmigan Creek Campground just south offers a fish-viewing platform and the Ptarmigan Lake Trail a steady climb to a seven-mile round trip destination. Note that the campground closes for winter; in that season the entrance road and camping loops are groomed for Nordic and freestyle skiing. For current conditions, fees and reservation details, contact the Seward Ranger District at (907) 522-8368 or the general information line at (907) 288-3178.
