“We are Longtime Alaskans. The outhouse at Ptarmigan Creek CG was BRUTAL. Without question it was, constantly, the worst smelling outhouse we have ever used in AK. It appeared to be VERY Full and well overdue a pump out. ”

Ptarmigan Creek Campground is a small, quiet site set at about 470 feet elevation along Ptarmigan Creek and a short walk from the turquoise shore of Kenai Lake. The campground's 13 campsites each accommodate both RVs and tents (all 13 sites are both RV and tent sites), with gravel parking aprons, a picnic table and a campfire ring at every site. There are no electrical or sewer hookups, so RVs need to be self-contained; firewood is available for purchase on site. Spruce and paper birch shade the sites and open views of the Chugach Mountains frame the valley; miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails begin near the campground, and the Ptarmigan Lake Trail follows the lake shore before climbing through meadows and forest. The site offers practical amenities for backcountry access: drinking water, vault toilets and dumpsters, and a fish-viewing platform on Ptarmigan Creek where you can watch red salmon spawn from late August into early September. Anglers often catch Dolly Varden and rainbow trout in nearby waters, and the surrounding Chugach National Forest supports wildlife including moose, brown and black bear, mountain sheep and goats. For broader recreation beyond the campground, the forest provides biking, camping, hiking, hunting, water sports, winter sports and opportunities to stay in fire lookouts or cabins overnight. For the latest information on fees, seasonal conditions and any reservation rules, call the local office at (907) 522-8368 or the general information line at (907) 288-3178; the campground is reached from Anchorage by heading south on the Seward Highway toward Crown Point (about 100 miles) and is located at Milepost 23.1 on the Kenai Peninsula.
