Cooper Creek South Campground sits at about 400 feet in a mixed stand of spruce and cottonwood where Cooper Creek meets the Kenai River, offering open sightlines to the surrounding mountains. The setting is both river-front and forested, so mornings often bring the sound of water and bird activity while afternoons are good for paddling short stretches of the river or heading to nearby angling spots sockeye (red) salmon fishing is a major draw on the Kenai and Russian Rivers, and both boat and bank fishing are practiced here. Hikers and mountain bikers will note the nearby Resurrection Pass Trail, a 38-mile route that gains from roughly 500 to 2,600 feet and provides longer backcountry options; more broadly, the Chugach National Forest's five million acres support biking, hunting, water and winter sports, hiking, and opportunities to stay in fire lookouts or cabins. The campground has 21 sites in total: 20 sites are configured for both RVs and tents and one site is RV-only, and sites are available by advance reservation. Basic on-site amenities include drinking water, vault toilets, picnic tables and campfire rings, plus dumpsters; parking aprons are gravel and space is limited, so larger rigs may find maneuvering tight. There's no on-site dump station, but a pay dump station is available at nearby Quartz Creek Campground. For current fees, seasonal openings, and specific access questions call local information at (907) 522-8368 or general information at (907) 288-3178. You'll find the campground on the Sterling Highway at Milepost 50.7 (on the opposite side of the river), south of Anchorage via the Seward and Sterling highways toward Soldotna.
