Russian River Campground sits at about 400 feet on the eastern Kenai Peninsula where the Russian and Kenai Rivers come close together, roughly 110 miles south of Anchorage and 40 miles east of Soldotna along the Sterling Highway near Milepost 54. The site offers 80 campsites in total: 49 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 31 designated RV sites, spread among paved roads and parking spurs. From May through September the campground operates with full services and a 24-hour contact station; water, vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings and dumpsters are provided for day and overnight visitors. Note that beginning Aug. 15, 2023 the campground was closed for reconstruction of a one-mile section of access road to reduce frost heave; the Forest Service anticipated reopening for reservations on Recreation.gov with first reservation arrivals beginning June 5, 2023 and potential earlier first-come, first-served openings because conditions and schedules can change, check Recreation.gov or call (907) 522-8368 (local) or (907) 288-3178 before you travel. Recreation here centers on angling and trail access. The Russian River is one of Alaska's busiest sockeye streams and a strong run for rainbow trout; state fishing licenses are required and anglers must follow Alaska regulations and any emergency orders (sockeye retention is allowed June 11 Aug 20, silver salmon July 1 Sept 30, trout June 11 Apr 30 under current orders). Two well-used trails begin at the campground: the Russian Lakes Trail (about 2.3 miles to Russian River Falls with a viewing platform for leaping salmon, and an extended route that continues roughly 19 more miles past two lakes to an upper trailhead) and the 1.25-mile Angler's Trail, which follows the Russian River canyon to the Kenai Russian confluence and includes 22 defined river access points (and another 15 along the Kenai after a wade crossing). Three reserveable public-use cabins Barber, Aspen Flats and Upper Russian Lake sit along the Russian Lakes route for backpackers who want overnight shelter. Other nearby features that shape the experience include the Russian River Ferry (for crossing the Kenai), the Sportsman's Boat Launch on the Kenai River, the K'beq interpretive site with tribal-led programs and the long Resurrection Pass Trail for extended backcountry trips.
