“Willawaw is our very favorite place in Alaska to camp! The hosts this year have been the very best! Always cleaning and checking on campsites. So nice to talk to. ”
“The camphosts, Zac and Jesse, are amazing managers of the campground. They not only go above and beyond the basics, they are friendly and helpful. Hopefully, they will return next year or be somewhere like Quartz Creek where their impact is even greater. ”
“The person working as the campground manager was great! She was very helpful, accommodating and knowledgeable of the area. That made our stay so much nicer.”

Williwaw Campground sits in the Portage Valley just outside Girdwood, a short drive south of Anchorage along the Seward Highway. The site fronts Williwaw Creek and is immediately adjacent to the Williwaw Salmon Viewing Area, where translucent creek pools fill with spawning salmon in August an easy, low-effort viewing opportunity right from the campground. The valley opens toward glaciated ridgelines and Portage Glacier and Portage Lake lie a short distance east, reminders of the region's ice-carved landscape; over the last 80 years the glacier has been active enough to calve large bergs into the lake. Trails fan out from the campground: the Williwaw Nature Trail leads to a fish-viewing platform, passes under the highway bridge and follows the creek to a series of ponds, then links to the Trail of Blue Ice and on to the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center. Wildlife is a big part of the experience here moose, brown and black bears, mountain goats, lynx, bald eagles and even wolves are all reported in the area and those trail connections and the valley roads make birding, day hikes and short nature outings easy. Nearby day destinations include the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Portage Glacier, the town of Whittier and Byron Glacier. The campground itself is small and quietly equipped for basic backcountry-style car camping and RV stops: there are 19 total campsites, of which 13 accommodate both RVs and tents and 6 are RV-only. Sites are described as nicely separated; you'll find picnic tables, vault toilets, a parking area and hand pumps that supply drinking water, but no electric hookups. That makes Williwaw a good base for fishing, wildlife watching, hiking and mountain biking on nearby trails rather than an RV resort-style stay. For practical matters such as current fees, reservation rules and seasonal status, call local information at (907) 522-8368 or general information at (907) 288-3178 before you go. To reach the campground from Anchorage, head roughly 55 miles south on the Seward Highway and turn onto Portage Glacier Road (around milepost 78.9); Williwaw Campground is about 4.1 miles down that road in the Portage Valley.
