“Really nice campground. Very clean sites and facilities. Great hiking right from the campground, amazing views of Turnagain Arm and just down the road from Historic Hope town site. ”
“We have camped there many times. It is a great quiet place to camp. It is in the forrest so nature is all around you”

Porcupine Campground sits beside Porcupine Creek on the south shore of Turnagain Arm in Chugach National Forest, a compact, largely birch-lined site that feels remote despite being close to the small town of Hope. From the campground's scenic overlook you can often watch windsurfers carving the tidal flats and, on good days, spot beluga whales feeding in the arm Turnagain Arm is the western branch of Cook Inlet that separates the Kenai Peninsula from the mainland. The immediate landscape is low-elevation coastal forest and tidal shore, and the Gull Rock Trail a 5.1-mile route that follows the south shore of Turnagain Arm from the Hope road to a rocky peninsula provides a straightforward way to explore the area on foot, bike, or horseback; snow typically melts here by early May, and the trail combines long, gentle climbs with a few steep sections. Beyond the trailhead you'll find regional options for fishing, whitewater rafting and gold panning, and more forest-scale activities such as hunting, water sports and winter recreation are available elsewhere in the Chugach. Practical amenities at Porcupine are modest but functional: the campground has a total of 34 sites, of which 23 are designated for RVs and 11 for tents, and each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring. There's drinking water available from a hand well, an accessible vault toilet, onsite firewood for sale, and a dumpster for pack-in/pack-out trash. The site is reached by following the Hope cutoff off the Seward Highway roughly 70 miles south of Anchorage into the town of Hope; the campground sits at the end of that road. Because services are limited and seasonal conditions (especially on trails) can vary, check current information with the Chugach National Forest regarding fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings before you go.
