Charles F ★ 4 · Aug 2025This is a VERY remote campground, but once reached over 14 miles of unpaved roadway the quiet will capture or at first it may cause some intrepidation. The camp is comprised of ten small sites, I was alone for the first few days. But all that is overcome by the daily ride out and the wildlife encountered, the comical antics of prairie dog town, the graceful speed of pronghorn, herds of free range cattle and horses seemingly oblivious to your presence or that you would like equal use of the road!
Teresa P ★ 3 · Aug 2023Sites are very small.and overgrown, but there is plenty of dispersed camping along the way, and after reviewing our site, we opted to leave to a dispersed camping site that was better maintained. No trash service, bathrooms were pretty rough

French Creek Campground is a small, low-key site on Forest Road 500 in the Snowy Range portion of Medicine Bow Routt National Forests. The campground has 11 campsites each set up to accommodate both RVs and tents with hookups not provided and a size limit allowing small trailers only (up to 32 feet). Onsite amenities include potable water (note that water service and trash pickup are discontinued after mid-September), vault toilets, picnic tables and metal fire grates; however, Trash Service is NOT Provided year-round, so plan to pack out your garbage. This is a self-service fee area: the nightly fee is $10 per site, payable by cash or check made out to "USDA Forest Service." If you reserve a site, changes and cancellations are managed through My Reservations; completely changing your dates carries a $10 change fee per reserved site, cancellations before your arrival are refundable minus a $10 cancellation fee (and any reservation/change fees), and late cancellations defined as midnight one calendar day before check-in for individual campsites may also forfeit your first night's recreation fee. The campground sits within easy reach of fishing, hiking and mountain-biking terrain that defines the Snowy Range character: North and South French Creeks offer nearby angling access, the Lower Tie Hack trailhead is roughly a quarter mile east, and a larger network of trails and lakes (including Silver Lake, Lake Marie Falls, Mirror Lake, Medicine Bow Peak Trail, French Creek Canyon Trail and Miners Cabin Trail) lies within a short drive. The broader national forest and adjacent Thunder Basin Grassland support a wide variety of recreation biking, climbing, backpacking, wildlife viewing and winter sports among them so French Creek works well as a basecamp for day hikes and multi-day outings. Access to the campground is from Riverside, Wyoming via Highway 230 and County Road 660 onto Forest Road 500; remember that elevation and weather change quickly in this region (the Medicine Bow Routt complex ranges from montane to alpine conditions), so be prepared for frost, sudden snow or high winds even in summer if you plan to climb into higher country.
