“Awesome campground, beautiful location. The site are clean, include a picnic table, and a good tent pad. Sites are fairly well spaced out as well. ”
“There are a lot of stromatolites downhill from the north side of the campground (sites 2-3-4)”

Perched at 10,800 feet, Sugarloaf Campground is the highest developed camping area in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and opens to long views across the Snowy Range, whose peaks reach about 12,000 feet. The campground sits on a spruce-and-fir lined hillside amid a network of roughly 102 recreational lakes; Libby and Lewis Lakes lie within easy reach and offer clear, snowmelt water and shoreline fishing for brook trout and splake (Lewis is stocked annually). Non-motorized boats are allowed on those lakes but must be carried to the water's edge, and the forest prohibits use of live-bait fish in its lakes and streams. Three trailheads nearby lead to routes of varying difficulty, and the Savage Run and Platte River Wilderness areas lie to the south for anyone seeking a longer, more remote backpacking or horseback trip. Wildlife commonly encountered here includes elk, mule deer, moose, marmots, pikas and the occasional black bear or bobcat; because the site is high and exposed, shade is limited a result of elevation, bark-beetle impacts and hazard-tree removal and visitors should be prepared for sudden cold snaps, wind or even snow outside the typical summer months. Sugarloaf has 15 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents, each site equipped with a tent pad, picnic table and a fire ring; tents must be set up inside the provided pads. Small trailers up to 22 feet are practicable, but there are no electrical, water or black-water hookups. The campground provides a vault toilet, trash collection and a handpump water source that is typically available July through September but can vary with weather, maintenance and testing, so bring extra water or confirm availability before you arrive. Access is via State Highway 130 between Laramie and Saratoga, with the turn onto Forest Service Road 346 bringing you the final short distance; for current fees, reservation options and road or seasonal conditions check the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest website or contact the forest office. Onsite and nearby activities include hiking, fishing, non-motorized boating, wildlife viewing and winter sports in season, while the broader national forest offers biking, OHV riding, hunting, horseback riding and scenic auto touring.
