Lake Sherwood Recreation Area sits at about 2,600 feet on the shore of a 156-acre lake, the largest impoundment in Monongahela National Forest, and it's laid out to support a broad range of family camping styles. The campground complex contains 107 sites in all 93 designed to accommodate both RVs and tents and 14 tent-only sites and is divided into loops that include Mead (36 sites) and Pine (35 sites). On the water you'll find a boat ramp and two swimming beaches, plus shoreline fishing for tiger muskie, channel catfish, bullhead, bluegill and largemouth bass. A handful of marked trails radiate out of the recreation area Lake Sherwood Trail, Upper Meadow Trail, Meadow Mountain Trail and Meadow Creek so you can turn a morning paddle into an afternoon hike through the surrounding mixed hardwood forest where deer, wild turkey, fox and the occasional black bear are part of the landscape. Day-use picnic areas, picnic shelters, a playground and volleyball courts round out options for families who want both active and relaxed time at the lake. Campsites come with practical, campground-scale amenities: each site has a parking spur, tent pad, picnic table, fire ring and lantern post, and parking aprons are gravel (some up to 20 feet wide). Restrooms with running water, flush toilets and hot showers and seasonal electricity are available during the summer; in spring and fall the area reverts to vault toilets and a hand-pump well. There are no electrical, sewer or water hookups at sites, but a dump station is on site. Fees vary by loop: West Shore Loop (sites 1 26) is $20/night for a single site ($40 for a double) and $24 for an electric site; Pine Run and Meadow Creek loops are $20/night; the tent-only Cales Knoll loop is $16/night and is not reservable. Group camping runs $100/night; picnic shelters rent for $50/day (that fee includes one vehicle parking pass, additional vehicles must pay the $5/day day-use pass). Note that West Shore is the only loop open in spring and fall and its sites are not reservable during those seasons call ahead for current status. The area is roughly north of White Sulphur Springs and provides easy access to regional draws such as the Greenbrier and the West Virginia State Fair in Lewisburg.
