“Facilities were nice and clean. Near a good hiking trail. Campsite 23 & 24 are on top of each other. The fire pits and tables were right next to each other. Good thing there weren't any campers on site 23. It would be nice if two families or friends were camping together.”

Morris Hill sits on a forested ridge overlooking the south end of Lake Moomaw, about a half-mile from the shoreline, and combines easy access to water recreation with a quiet, family-focused campground layout. There are 56 campsites in all: 52 sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and four tent-only sites; those sites are clustered around a spur that contains 16 individual sites, plus two separate group sites. Most family sites will fit any size RV and the campground provides flush toilets, hot showers, potable drinking water and a small playground for children. The two group sites are rustic each can host up to 25 guests and room for about eight tents but offer no water or electricity; they do include picnic tables, a group grill and two fully accessible vault toilets. Note that group camping will not be open this season due to COVID-19 restrictions, and if you do reserve a group site in the future you'll follow the entry instructions on your confirmation letter to open the heavy gate to the Corps of Engineers area. Recreational options are concentrated nearby: Coles Point Beach and boat ramp sit within a couple miles and draw swimmers and boaters, while a fishing pier less than a mile from the campground is popular for brown and rainbow trout, bass and crappie; Back Creek is another local trout spot. Hikers and bikers can use the Morris Hill Bike Trail and the Fortney Loop Trail for short to moderate outings through mixed hardwood and pine forest, and wildlife viewers often spot waterfowl on the lake and deer in the woods. The campground functions as a convenient base for lake activities, day trips downstream on the Jackson River for fly-fishing or paddling, and a half-hour drive east to the small resort town of Hot Springs. Because the campground is part of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, it shares access to the wide range of regional activities boating, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing while offering the simple pleasures of campfires, berry-picking and watching the changing light over Lake Moomaw.
