Bolar Mountain Recreation Area sits on the northern shore of Lake Moomaw, a 2,530-acre impoundment on the Jackson River held back by Gathright Dam. The lake averages about 80 feet deep and offers roughly 43 miles of wooded shoreline, which shapes the feel of the place: a mix of open water for boating and quiet coves for fishing or paddling. Boating and water sports are central here the Bolar Flat Marina has a boat ramp and a modern dock with boat slips and the shallow beach areas make canoeing, water skiing, and swimming easy options when conditions allow. Anglers come for brown and rainbow trout, bass and crappie, and hikers will find roughly 11 miles of trails leaving the campground that lead to two scenic overlooks, Islands Overlook Spur and Grouse Point. If you want a more primitive stay, you can hike or boat to dispersed sites at Greenwood Point. Cell service is intermittent to non-existent across much of the area, so plan routes and reservations ahead and be prepared to disconnect; also note that GPS routing can steer drivers onto Richardson Gorge Road, a narrow dirt road with steep, soft edges that is not recommended especially when towing. The campground complex itself is divided into four developed campgrounds Sugar Ridge and Campgrounds 1, 2 and 3 and together they provide 123 sites: 115 sites configured for both RVs and tents, plus 8 tent-only sites. "Prime" sites, scattered through the loops, offer direct lake access or a water view; electrical hookups are concentrated mostly in Campground 1, with additional electric options in Campgrounds 2 and 3. Potable water taps are available throughout the campgrounds, and restroom facilities include flush toilets and showers. Individual sites come with a picnic table, lantern post and a fire ring, and a camp host is on hand to answer questions. RV users can empty waste tanks at one of two dump stations located in Campground 1 and Campground 2. For up-to-date information on fees, seasonal openings and reservations, check the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest website or contact the district office before you arrive. Nearby outdoor options include the Hidden Valley and Warm Springs areas good choices for additional trail riding, trout fishing, and services such as restaurants and a historic bed and breakfast.
