Blue Bend Recreation Area sits in a wooded valley at about 1,860 feet on Anthony Creek, with a view toward Round Mountain and immediate access to the Big Draft Wilderness. The creek is a central feature cool enough for a summer dip and home to trout for anglers and the 5-mile Blue Bend Loop Trail, which links to the Anthony Creek Trail, is a popular day-hike that passes three overlooks and leads deeper into the wilderness. The site keeps visible echoes of the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps work: rustic wooden picnic tables and shelters give the place an old-forest character that many visitors enjoy. Wildlife is part of the experience here; black bear, white-tailed deer, turkey and a variety of predators and furbearers inhabit the forest, so store food securely and follow park guidelines when wildlife is nearby. The campground itself has 23 campsites: 21 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 2 tent-only sites, each on a parking spur with a picnic table, campfire ring, trash bin and a lantern post for hanging lights. Flush toilets and showers are provided in summer, while vault toilets serve campers through spring and fall; running water is seasonal and a hand pump is available during the shoulder seasons. A large group picnic shelter that seats about 75 people can be reserved during peak season, and fees are reduced when the water system is shut down for the fall (typically mid-October) and then raised again in spring when water comes back on that restart varies with weather and usually falls between mid-April and early May, so call ahead before you plan to arrive. Access is straightforward from the nearby community of Alvon and White Sulphur Springs: Blue Bend is reached off WV-16 just northwest of Alvon, about a short drive north of White Sulphur Springs, placing it within the broad recreational mix of Monongahela National Forest where auto touring, biking, fishing, swimming, picnicking and backcountry hiking are all available.
