“Nice campground, well maintained. Water is not potable due to high magnesium levels so bring your own.”

Moose Lake Campground sits on the shore of Moose Lake, a 1,670-acre lake ringed by pine, spruce, maple, aspen and balsam and threaded with jack pine plantations that give the area a varied, working-forest feel. The immediate setting feels quietly forested rather than manicured: expect forest-fringed campsites that look out toward the water, frequent sightings of loons and eagles, and periodic views of larger mammals such as elk. The lake itself is central to the experience there's a sandy beach and a boat ramp that make launching a canoe, kayak or small powerboat straightforward, and anglers come here for musky, walleye, bass and panfish. Moose Lake lies east of Hayward and is reached via Forest Service roads off State Highway 77; because access uses unpaved forest roads, check current road conditions before you go. The campground is small and semi-secluded, with a total of 9 campsites; all nine accommodate both tents and RVs. Every site is furnished with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill, and the campground provides accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection. Roads into the campground are not paved and parking aprons are grass or gravel, so larger rigs should plan accordingly and verify vehicle access in advance. From camp you have direct access to miles of trails for off-highway vehicle use, hiking and mountain biking, plus the usual forest-wide activities wildlife viewing, picnicking, hunting in season, and auto touring through the Chequamegon Nicolet system. Fees, reservation rules, seasonal openings and detailed site maps are set by the U.S. Forest Service; consult the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest recreation pages before you arrive for up-to-date information.
