Black Lake Campground sits along the eastern shore of a 129-acre lake in the southern part of the Chequamegon National Forest, where stands of birch, pine and spruce press close to the water's edge. The lake itself is calm and shallow in many places, making it a reliable spot for fishing musky, walleye, bass and panfish are commonly caught and for paddling in a canoe or kayak. A grassy beach gives families room to spread out, swim or play on shore, and wildlife is part of the everyday scenery: visitors often spot deer, fox and loons, and elk are present in the wider forest. For hikers and trail riders the campground is a gateway: a four-mile Black Lake interpretive trail loops through nearby shoreline woodland, while hundreds of miles of surrounding routes support off-highway vehicles, mountain biking and horseback riding across the Chequamegon-Nicolet expanse; the broader forest also offers auto touring, hunting, fire lookout/cabin overnight opportunities and other recreational options. The campsite cluster contains 29 total campsites 25 sites listed for both RVs and tents and 4 tent-only sites many placed right on the water so you can step from your site onto the lake. Each site is outfitted with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; the campground provides drinking water, accessible vault toilets, trash collection and recycling bins. The paved spur into the campground makes access easier for tow vehicles, and fuel, fishing supplies, firewood and restaurants are available in Hayward about a 15-mile drive away. Because fees, reservation options and road or trail conditions can change seasonally, check the Chequamegon-Nicolet Forest Service pages before you go for current fees, reservation policies and access updates.
