“I appreciate the trees between the campsites and the large campsites. I wish the second water pump was fixed (just needs a handle). Overall it was a very nice experience.”

Bear Lake Campground occupies the southwest corner of a 68-acre lake in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, where a mix of hardwoods and pines shades sites perched along the shore and on a low ridge above the water. The lake is relatively shallow (maximum depth about 20 feet) with moderate water quality and supports northern pike, panfish and largemouth bass, so anglers who favor pike will find the fishing here productive; small boats, canoes and kayaks can be launched from the campground's boat landing. The area around the campground draws fall-color visitors and grouse hunters, and the Rat River trail is a nearby option for hikers; trout fishing opportunities are a short drive away on the Peshtigo and Rat Rivers. Facilities are straightforward and practical: 27 sites in total, 22 of which accommodate both RVs and tents (most of those sites will take rigs around 30 feet or longer) and five tent-only walk-in sites located on a wooded peninsula for added privacy. There are vault toilets, a potable water source, a swim beach, a picnic area and paved (blacktop) roads through the campground, but no mention is made of electrical, sewer or full RV hookups, so come prepared for primitive/drive-in camping comforts. For current fees, seasonal openings and reservation rules check the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest camping pages before you go; beyond the immediate lakeshore activities, the broader forest offers motorized trails, horseback riding, auto touring, and a wide range of recreational opportunities.
