“Great Campground along the river. Close to the highway but is very lightly traveled at night. Good access to Mt Rainier Sunrise area.”

Halfway Flat Campground sits on the east side of the Cascade Range about 30 miles west of Naches and is reached from Highway 410 via Forest Roads 1709 and 1704. The site occupies a pocket of old-growth Douglas fir, western hemlock and cedar, with grassy clearings, ferns and moss underfoot and the Naches River running close enough to be part of the view from many sites. The small footprint eight campsites in total means a quiet, intimate feel; all eight sites are configured to accommodate both tents and RVs. Basic amenities include potable water and vault toilets. During peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend) five of the sites are available for advanced reservation; beginning in mid-September the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground is also roughly 30 minutes downhill from the Chinook Pass summit and the western entrance to Mount Rainier National Park, making Mather Memorial Parkway an easy and scenic day drive from camp. Outdoor opportunities are concentrated and varied: the Naches River beside the campground supports populations of rainbow and brown trout and is popular for both angling and paddling, while whitewater paddlers will find additional tributaries and runs in the drainage. Trails and bridle routes lead from the campground toward the William O. Douglas and Norse Peak Wilderness areas, and a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail is within reach for longer hikes. Closer in, the Boulder Cave Trail runs along the river with interpretive signs and a short cave to explore; within about 10 miles you'll also find lake access and a boat ramp, hunting areas, and trails used by horseback riders, mountain bikers and off-highway vehicle users. The forest supports abundant wildlife deer, elk, porcupine and many migratory birds and also provides habitat for some threatened and endangered species, so visitors should follow standard practices for storing food and minimizing disturbance. Summers are typically warm and dry, winters see abundant snow with generally clear skies, and the broader Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest offers year-round recreation from fishing and climbing to winter sports and wildlife viewing.
