“Lava Point was a very well maintained campground, especially for a primitive campground. The bathrooms and trash were well maintained and it was very peaceful.”
“Clean location, great for stargazing. A little remote. No service at the campground, but did get some reception at the overlook”
“No water and no delineated water supply location was a big negative during our stay. Site access was level and spacious a plus. Overall Not what I expected from a NPS campsite. ”

Perched high on the Kolob Terrace at 7,890 feet, Lava Point Campground offers a cool, wooded contrast to Zion Canyon's sun-baked sandstone. Pine and aspen shade the small camp loop and help block gusts on windier days, while a short walk from the entrance leads to Lava Point Overlook with wide views southward toward the cliffs of Zion Canyon. Barney's Trail departs from the campground and links hikers to the Overlook and the West Rim Trail, and the high-elevation setting makes the site a strong choice for wildlife watching and very dark-night stargazing after the sun slips below the rim. Because the campground sits well above the canyon floor, it's a refuge from summer heat and a different ecological band of plants and animals compared with lower-elevation trailheads you'll pass on the drive in. Lava Point is intentionally simple and remote: the loop contains six campsites in total, and each site accepts both tents and RVs but provides no electrical hookups. This is a primitive, dry campground there's no potable water on site so plan to pack in everything you need; each site does include a picnic table, fire ring, and a trash receptacle, and restroom facilities are pit toilets. The campground is typically open from May through September as weather allows; it sits about 25 miles north of Virgin on Kolob Terrace Road (roughly a 45-minute drive from Virgin) and is about 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Zion's South Entrance in Springdale. Reservations are required in advance through Recreation.gov (or by calling 1-877-444-6777), cost $20 per night, and must be handled before arrival because wireless coverage is very limited and you cannot pay or secure a spot on site. Due to the remote location, reservation modifications are the camper's responsibility and Recreation.gov's rules and reservation policies apply.
