Watchman Campground sits just inside Zion's south entrance, a short walk from the Visitor Center, the canyon shuttle stop and the small, art-filled town of Springdale. The campsites lie along the Virgin River at the base of the Watchman, the rocky peak that gives the campground its name; sandstone walls in shades of cream, pink and red flank the site and light up at sunrise and sunset. From here you can step onto three trails without driving: the Watchman Trail, a moderately steep climb to viewpoints above the campground; the short Archeology Trail to a local site; and the Pa'rus Trail, a paved riverside route that's open to bikes and the only park trail that allows dogs. Many of Zion's classic climbs and longer hikes require a short shuttle ride into the main canyon (shuttles operate seasonally and are required for most canyon access from roughly March through November). In addition to hiking and climbing, the campground is convenient for biking along the river, wildlife viewing among cottonwoods that turn gold in autumn, and quick dips in the cold river on hot summer afternoons. The campground has 184 sites in all: 160 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 24 tent-only sites. Sites are arranged in six loops: Loop A (29 sites) and Loop B (63 sites) contain the standard electric spots suitable for tents or RVs; Loops C (28 sites) and D (40 sites) are non-electric and do not permit vehicles 19 feet and over (or that length in combined vehicles); Loop F (18 sites) is walk-to tent-only camping, and the Zion Group Sites (6 sites, the E loop) are tent-only group areas that hold between seven and 40 people. Basic campground services include toilets, drinking water, and picnic tables; there are no full hookups, but most electric hookups are 30-amp (a handful of 50-amp sites exist) and a dump station with potable water is located at the campground entrance. Watchman also posts seasonal advisories you should plan for: tent caterpillars can drop from trees in April and May, and ants are especially numerous after summer monsoons in July and August (visitors may not apply insecticidal treatments). Watchman is open year-round with reservations available six months in advance; a $10 service fee applies to reservation modifications, cancellations generally carry a $10 fee (cancellations the day before or day of arrival also forfeit the first night's fee), group-site cancellations within 14 days incur a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night, and group fees run $50, $90, or $130 per night depending on capacity. For campground-specific questions call (877) 444-6777 or, if you must change or cancel after midnight Eastern Time on your arrival day, email zion_watchman_campground@nps.gov.
