“Excellent location walkable to Monicello Lake. Sites are spacious and well kept and vault toilets were very clean. Aspens surround every site. Highly recommend!”
“Magical campground! Great location for visiting Canyonlands National Park Needles District.”
“Wonderful tent site at the far end of the campground. The main loop was full with a very large extended group/family but I had the small loop all to myself. Warning that there are only two pit toilets for the campground and both are a hike from this site.”

Buckboard Campground sits at about 8,900 feet at the foot of the Abajo Mountains, roughly six miles west of Monticello on paved Forest Road 105. The site is shaded by aspens and Gambel oak, with summer days typically in the mid-70s to mid-80s and nights dropping into the 50s and 60s; mule deer, wild turkeys and the occasional black bear move through the trees. There are TOTAL CAMPSITES: 12 10 are set up for both RVs and tents and 2 are tent-only and the campground also offers two group sites that can each hold up to 50 guests. Access to the loop road and parking spurs is graveled, while the approach on Forest Road 105 is paved. Practical amenities are basic but solid: two vault toilets, seasonal potable water, and a 14-day stay limit. Campers are allowed to collect firewood in and around the campground; beyond that, check with the Manti-La Sal National Forest office for current fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings. The campground is a good base for fishing, hiking and off-highway vehicle routes. Several trailheads are nearby, including Robertson's Pasture Trail and Spring Creek Trail, and the Abajo Loop State Scenic Backway runs past the campground a route that climbs from red-rock canyons to alpine ridgelines over 10,000 feet, offering overlooks and panoramic views; it's generally suitable for passenger vehicles from late spring through fall but is not recommended for large RVs. Beyond the immediate area you can explore large parks and monuments Canyonlands, Arches, Mesa Verde, Natural Bridges and wilderness like Dark Canyon; Lake Powell, Edge of the Cedars State Park and numerous archaeological sites are also within day-trip range. The broader Manti-La Sal National Forest supports a wide range of activities biking, horseback riding, hunting, interpretive programs, wildlife viewing and winter sports among them so plan according to season and check local road and trail conditions before heading out.
