“Site was listed as shaded, no shade on camping platform. Otherwise, a good primitive camp ground. Showers would be nice for primitive campers.”
“Great little campground. Clean restrooms and campsites. Very quiet as well. ”

Nizhoni Campground sits at about 7,000 feet on the lower slopes of the Abajo Mountains, where stands of Ponderosa pine give the sites partial afternoon shade and Gambel oak and sagebrush define the understory. The campground contains 23 individual campsites all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and the layout also includes several single-family spurs plus two group sites that each hold up to 50 guests. Roads and parking spurs are gravel, and you'll find picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets and seasonal drinking water on site; firewood may be collected in and around the campground. Management limits stays to 14 consecutive days. Because conditions and fees can change, check the Manti-La Sal National Forest web pages or visitor center for the latest information on reservations, seasonal openings and any fees before you go. Recreation at Nizhoni and the surrounding forest is varied: nearby trailheads such as Shay Ridge, Aspen Flat and Red Ledges put quality day hikes within easy reach, while wildlife viewing is reliable (mule deer, wild turkeys, Abert's squirrels and the occasional black bear). The Abajo Loop State Scenic Backway passes the campground and climbs from the red-rock canyons of the desert floor up toward peaks above 10,000 feet the byway offers overlooks and changing landscapes and is generally suitable for passenger vehicles from late spring through fall but is not recommended for large RVs. Beyond hiking and OHV riding (both popular here), the broader Manti-La Sal National Forest region supports biking, fishing, horseback riding, hunting, interpretive programs, access to fire lookouts/cabins, winter sports and more; major attractions within a longer drive include Arches, Canyonlands and Mesa Verde National Parks, Edge of the Cedars State Park, Lake Powell and numerous archaeological sites. Nizhoni is reached from the Blanding area by following E. Pinion Ridge Road and then Forest Road 079 into the Abajo foothills a short forest-road drive places you among the pines and immediate access to the trails and byway.
